The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has asked the federal government to allow its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, receive medical treatment for his “deteriorating” health.
In June, Nnamdi Kanu was arrested and extradited to Nigeria to face charges over alleged treason — he has since been remanded in DSS custody.
Although the federal government hasn’t disclosed details of where Kanu was arrested, IPOB had alleged that he was picked up in Kenya.
Speaking on Kanu’s alleged health condition, Emmanuel Powerful, the group’s spokesman, said the federal government should allow the IPOB leader access to proper medical care.
“We are alerting the world about this anomaly to compel the Nigerian government to grant our Leader’s doctors access to see him for a thorough medical examination, bearing in mind the terrible torture he underwent for eight (8) days at the hands of the Kenyan security agents,” IPOB’s spokesman said.
“We wish to unequivocally state that no harm should befall our leader as the consequences can only be better imagined.”
The group also urged the “UN, AU, EU, ECOWAS and other relevant organisations across the globe to rise in defence of justice and compel the Nigerian Government” to grant Kanu access to his doctors.
“Our Leader must not die in DSS custody, neither should he suffer any serious health complications,” Powerful said.
“Our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has not committed any crime against the Nigerian or Kenyan government to warrant being treated as a criminal.
“Human rights organisations and men and women of good conscience across the world should not watch idly while our leader is being dehumanised.”
