Imo community pass night in bush as gunmen kill soldiers

 


Hundreds of villagers in Awo- Mmamma community in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State who fled their homes after gunmen reportedly killed a military personnel on Monday afternoon said it’s regrettable that they would be spending their night in the bush.

Sources within Awo-Mmamma community told our correspondent on Monday that there was mass exodus of people, especially youths from the community, because of the fear of unknown.

Narrating the ugly situation, he said some hoodlums attacked some soldiers at Ishieke junction in Awo Mmamma and killed one of them, zoomed off towards Ihiala in Anambra State and in a reprisal attack, the soldiers invaded the area and caused havoc by setting a filling station, cars, houses , hotel and stores on fire.”

A community leader who craved anonymity said, the ugly incident which happened at Ishieke junction had led to the destruction of property worth millions of Naira.

He said, “as I speak to you now, many more houses may be burnt tonight. We’re now at the mercy of angry soldiers.

“Hundreds of our people may pass this night in the bush. Our people have escaped from their land while those still remaining now live in fear,” he said

When contacted, the Police spokesperson, Micheal Abattam directed our correspondent to reach out to the Army.

The Army Spokesman, when contacted said he will get back to us, but as at the time of filing the report, he was yet to get back.
