After marathon negotiations between the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), both parties have reached a truce over the sack of about 800 workers.
The meeting, which lasted several hours, was convened by the Ministry of Labour and Employment following PENGASSAN’s threat to cut gas supply to the Dangote Refinery and withdraw services nationwide.
According to the communique issued after the talks, it was agreed that the disengaged workers would be recalled and redeployed to other subsidiaries within the Dangote Group without any loss of pay. The agreement also guaranteed that no staff would be victimized for their involvement in the crisis.
The negotiations were held at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) on Monday, September 29, and Tuesday, September 30, 2025. The high-level conciliation meeting was attended by the NSA, the Ministers of Labour and Employment, Finance and Economy, Budget and Economic Planning, as well as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), represented by the Permanent Secretary.
Also present were the Directors-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Chief Executives of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), representatives of NNPCL, and the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) alongside PENGASSAN officials.
In the communique signed by Labour Minister Dr. Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, the Ministry emphasized that unionization is a fundamental right of Nigerian workers and must be respected.
After examining the procedure used in the disengagement of workers, the meeting agreed that the management of Dangote Group shall immediately start the process of taking the disengaged staff to other companies within the Dangote Group, with no loss of pay. No worker will be victimised arising from their role in the impasse, the statement read.
With the resolutions reached, PENGASSAN has agreed to begin the process of calling off its strike action.
