The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Bishop Ndubueze Onyeagoziri Okorie, the founder of Champions Cathedral, Mile 50 Abakaliki, over an alleged leaked video scandal involving a minor.
The arrest, which has stirred widespread public debate, follows the circulation of images and footage online last week purportedly linking the cleric to inappropriate conduct with a girl said to have been under his care since 2021.
Police Confirmation
Speaking on Thursday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that Bishop Okorie is currently in custody and undergoing investigation.
“Yes, the bishop is in our custody. He is under investigation to ascertain the truth of the matter. That’s what I can say for now,” Ukandu said in a brief telephone interview with journalists.
According to the police spokesperson, the investigation is ongoing, and details will only be made public upon conclusion of inquiries. He assured the public that the matter would be handled with fairness and in accordance with the law.
Public Outrage
The case has sparked outrage across Ebonyi and beyond after the alleged images went viral on social media platforms. Civil society groups, religious bodies, and concerned citizens have condemned the scandal, calling for transparency in the investigation and justice for the alleged victim.
The scandal has also ignited heated conversations about accountability among religious leaders and the need for stronger protective measures for minors in the custody of clerics.
Bishop Denies Allegations
In response, Bishop Okorie has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as a deliberate attempt to malign his character and destroy his ministry.
In a statement issued by his media aide, the cleric claimed the controversial images were fabricated using artificial intelligence (AI) and maliciously circulated by individuals who have long sought to discredit him.
“I am innocent of these accusations. The images making rounds on social media are doctored and manipulated with artificial intelligence technology. They are the handiwork of those who want to tarnish my reputation and the good work God is doing through this ministry,” Bishop Okorie reportedly stated.
Victim’s Claim
Contrary to the bishop’s defense, the girl allegedly involved in the case granted a media interview where she claimed the images were authentic and taken by Bishop Okorie himself during her stay at his residence.
She alleged that she had been living with the cleric since 2021 and that the matter was not a fabrication but her lived experience. Her statement has added another dimension to the case, fueling calls for a thorough investigation.
Police Investigation Continues
The Ebonyi State Police Command has assured that it will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth. SP Ukandu stressed that both sides of the story are being investigated and that findings will be presented in line with due process.
Observers say the outcome of the investigation will be critical, not only for the individuals involved but also for restoring public trust in institutions of faith in the state.
Calls for Calm
Meanwhile, community leaders and advocacy groups have appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the police to conclude their investigation before drawing final conclusions.
They noted that while the allegations are serious and disturbing, it is important to ensure that justice is based on facts rather than speculation.
The case remains under close watch as residents of Ebonyi and Nigerians nationwide await further updates from the police.
