No fewer than 21 people narrowly escaped death in a road accident that occurred at the Lenuwa section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday morning.
The incident, which happened around 10:35 a.m., involved a commercial Mazda bus and a Mack truck, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).
TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the development in a statement. He said the crash was caused by excessive speeding and lack of concentration on the part of the bus driver, leading to a head-on collision with the truck.
“A serious road traffic accident occurred at the Lenuwa section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on 1 October 2025 at about 10:35hrs. The vehicles involved were a Mazda bus with number plate XQ 327 PH and a Mack truck with number plate EGG 694 YQ,” Akinbiyi said.
He added that 21 passengers were on board the bus at the time of the accident, comprising 20 adult males and one adult female. While no fatalities were recorded, eight passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“The injured victims were immediately taken to Famobis Hospital at Lotto by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Meanwhile, the accidented vehicles were towed by officers of the Mowe Divisional Police for further investigations,” he added.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the bus driver was driving recklessly before losing control and ramming into the truck. Emergency responders, including TRACE, FRSC, and the police, were said to have worked swiftly to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The crash comes amid repeated warnings by traffic authorities against overspeeding, which remains one of the leading causes of accidents on Nigerian highways. Just last month, four persons were confirmed dead while six others sustained injuries in a multiple crash along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, also linked to speeding.
Similarly, on Monday, a Togolese driver was arrested in Lagos after attempting to flee the scene of an accident where he knocked down a pedestrian at the Adeniji-Adele area of Lagos Island. The driver was reportedly speeding before losing control and hitting the pedestrian.
Authorities have continued to stress the need for motorists to obey traffic regulations, particularly on major expressways where excessive speeding and reckless driving frequently result in loss of lives and property.
While Wednesday’s crash did not claim any lives, it serves as yet another reminder of the dangers of overspeeding and the importance of road safety compliance.
