Osun PDP group seeks Wike’s intervention as crisis deepens

Fresh concerns have emerged within the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a pressure group urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to intervene in what it described as a worsening leadership crisis in the party.

The group, known as the Reset Group of Osun PDP, appealed to the national leadership of the party to take urgent steps to prevent what it warned could lead to the collapse of the party’s structure in the state.

In a letter addressed to the chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, Abdulrahaman Mohammed, and copied to Wike, the group raised concerns about the direction of the party under the current state leadership.

The letter, signed by the group’s President, Akinwale Oyetunde, and Secretary, Adeyeye Olugbenga, alleged that the actions of the Osun State leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party were weakening the party and pushing members toward other political platforms.

According to the group, “the situation has worsened due to decisions taken by the State Working Committee led by Sunday Bisi.”

The group specifically called for the dissolution of the committee, stating that the leadership crisis intensified after the state executives participated in the party’s convention held in Ibadan, which was later nullified by the court.

It also accused the State Working Committee of openly backing Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the Accord Party in the forthcoming August 15 poll.

The group alleged that the endorsement was made without the approval of the party’s National Working Committee.

“The state leadership has endorsed the Accord candidate, Governor Adeleke, without the official concurrence of the National Working Committee,” the group said.

It claimed that PDP members in the state had been instructed to register with the Accord Party as part of what it described as a coordinated political move.

“They have directed PDP members to register with the Accord Party and have perfected plans not to allow any PDP member to contest under the party’s platform,” the letter stated.

The group warned that if the situation was not addressed urgently, the political relevance of the PDP in Osun State could weaken ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It therefore urged Wike and the national leadership of the party to dissolve the current state executive council and constitute a caretaker committee.

According to the group, such a committee would allow party members and aspirants to freely contest elective positions without interference.

The development comes amid an ongoing dispute over the leadership of the party in the state, with two different factions laying claim to control of the PDP structure.

Earlier, a faction of the national leadership aligned with Seyi Makinde had announced the dissolution of the Osun State Working Committee led by Bisi and replaced it with a caretaker committee headed by Tunde Tijani.

However, the State Working Committee rejected the decision, insisting that its mandate remained valid.

Responding to the move, the committee stated, “No amount of external pressure, unlawful national posturing, or recycled intimidation can invalidate a structure that derives its legitimacy from due process and the collective will of party members in Osun State.”

They also urged members to remain calm and focused.
