A fire outbreak on Saturday, May 2, 2026, gutted parts of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat in Sokoto, destroying offices and valuable property.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the day along the secretariat complex in Sokoto, sending panic across the area as flames engulfed sections of the building.
Confirming the development, the Sokoto State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abubakar Aliyu, described the incident as unfortunate, noting that important documents and office equipment were lost in the fire.
He said, “It is a sad development for us, we lost vital documents and property to the fire. This will definitely affect our operations.”
Aliyu added that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained but hinted that it might not be unconnected to an electrical fault.
Officials of the Sokoto State Fire Service, who responded to the incident, said their men were able to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building.
A Fire Service official noted that no life was lost in the incident as of the time of this report, while authorities have commenced investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
