OAU academic staff begins strike over unpaid academic allowances

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife chapter has commenced an indefinite strike action.

ASUU said the strike action, which it confirmed to newsmen,  is to press home their demands over the refusal of the institution’s management to pay staff earned academic allowance.

The decision to commence on the strike action was reached on Monday morning after an emergency congress.

The Union Chairman, Adeola Egebdokun also said one of the reasons for the strike was the allegation that the OAU management led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede was delaying the payment of the allowances.

The union claimed the allowance had been remitted into the university account by the Federal Government since December 13, 2021.

However, an anonymous source within the university management said it was still studying the events before it can take any action.

He explained that the institution’s management sees the strike action by the OAU ASUU as a family affair.
