FA Cup: Rangnick blames referees for Man Utd’s defeat to Middlesbrough

Manchester United interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, has blamed match officials for their exit from the FA Cup.

The Red Devils were eliminated in the fourth round of the competition by Middlesbrough on Friday night.

Rangnick’s men lost 8-7 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, with Anthony Elanga missing the key penalty in the shootout.

Matt Crooks equalized for Middlesbrough during the regulation time after Duncan Watmore had appeared to handle the ball in the build-up.

But referee Anthony Taylor and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded it.

“How can it be accidental (handball) if he controls the ball up in the air with his hand?” Rangnick asked after the match.

“It was clear it should not stand, but in the end, I was really surprised it stood.”
