PDP backs Wike’s appointment as minister

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has kicked against what it described as attempts by some highly placed Nigerians acting under the sponsorship of the PDP to denigrate the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, over his nomination as a minister-designate.

The state PDP, in a statement by former spokesman of Rivers PDP Campaign Organization, Ogbonna Nwuke, said people led by the presidential candidate of PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have been holding meetings on how to deal with “a patriot and prominent nationalist whose interest it is to protect the unity and stability of our dear country.”

The party said the decision by President Bola Tinubu to nominate men and women with proven track records, including Wike, to serve the nation, “is being hailed by progressive-minded Nigerians as a masterstroke in ongoing efforts to reclaim their country.”

The statement noted that only people who do not wish the country well are the ones not in support of the move by the President.

It said the Tinubu administration is employing a bi-partisan approach to rebrand and rebuild the country and to provide solutions to Nigeria’s teething socio-economic and socio-political problems.

The state PDP questioned, “The gang of confusionists in the PDP who for selfish reasons want a war with Wike, the Nigerian people, and the Tinubu government.”

According to the Rivers PDP: “No amount of blackmail, intimidation, acts of reactionary provocations and threats will therefore deter the former Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike from responding to a call to service at a time of national emergency.”

Vowing to stand by Wike, the Rivers PDP warned: “We wish to remind the PDP of the danger in taking precipitate steps that may indeed mark the beginning of the end of a party that we have all labored to build.”
