A retired naval officer, Commodore Promise Dappah, has called on the Federal Government to spend more money on security instead of executing other projects in the country.
Dappah made this call on ‘Sunday Politics’, a programme on Channels Television.
He was speaking on national security, stressing that the security of the nation comes first before any other thing.
“So, what I’m saying is the issue of securitization. Because when a nation comes under this kind of a situation, there is what we call securitization. That is where security takes precedence over everything.
“Country like Algeria that is not even facing the type of challenges we have here is spending up to 10% of their GDP on defense. So what are we talking about? Then we that are neck deep in insecurity, we are spending less than 1% of our GDP on defense, and we have the luxury of building fancy projects in the country.
When people are not safe, the country is not safe, and you dare to build projects? What projects that could be better than the security of the country? You build bridges, build castle in the air. You could wake up tomorrow and everything will be down.
“So to me, I think we must securitize security issue. Security comes before everything. Government must move money, allocate a whole chunk of resources for defense of this country and the people,” he said.
